Copywriter, Copy Editor or Proofreader… Which Do You Need?

Very often I’m asked the difference between a copywriter, copy editor and proofreader. And it’s a fair question. The jobs of freelance copywriting, copy editing and proofreading are quite different in their scope and requirements, and therefore incur different fees. To help clear up this mystery, I’m going to explain my personal definition of each of these tasks below.

Copywriter: “I Need Help from Start to Finish.”

Are you looking for comprehensive assistance with press releases, website content or other marketing projects—from the ground up? If you have little to go on but some scribbled notes and a few good ideas, it’s likely that you need a copywriter. A seasoned freelance copywriter will take the time to learn about your business, determine your unique selling angle, and craft sales copy designed to captivate and motivate your target audience.

What Does a Copywriter Do?

  • Takes the time to learn about your business, products and/or services
  • Helps you find your copy “voice” and unique selling angle
  • Writes your sales copy from scratch

Copy Editor: “I’ve Written Drafts—But They Need Some Work.”

You’ve nailed your sales message. You’ve covered every benefit and feature. But you’ll be the first one to admit: you’re no Norman Mailer. If you’ve already written copy for your sales letter, website or marketing e-mail—but feel that it needs a bit of buff-and-polish, you probably need a freelance copy editor.

What Does a Copy Editor Do?

  • Reviews your existing copy drafts
  • Improves sentence structure and flow
  • Ensures your copy has a consistent “voice” and style
  • Brings to life dull, drab copy for improved sales appeal

Proofreader: “My Copy Just Needs a Second Set of Eyes!”

Do you have a sales presentation, brochure or sales letter that’s just about ready—but needs a once-over from someone who hasn’t been staring at it for days? If you’re simply looking for someone to check your copy for typos and formatting errors, you need a proofreader. An experienced freelance proofreader can give your important document that final review it needs before being submitted to the recipient or sent to print.

What Does a Proofreader Do?

  • Reviews your existing near-ready copy drafts or manuscript
  • Corrects basic grammar and spelling errors as well as typos
  • “Cleans up” your copy to prepare it for presentation or printing

What My Clients Are Saying About Me

"Finding a good freelance copywriter proved to be a very daunting task. After days of searching and interviewing prospective partners, Susan really make herself stand out above the rest. She is very flexible and can write passionately on any topic we present to her. We really appreciate the prompt turn around. The icing on the cake is, she is one of few partners that we can trust to talk directly to our clients - something we rarely feel comfortable with!"

"Susan has done a fantastic job for us as our freelance copywriter.  She worked with us to help us meet our deadlines.  The copy she wrote for us put a fresh spin on our products and got us out of the rut we had worked ourselves into over the years.  We look forward to many more projects with Susan as our freelance copywriter. We know that with her writing the copy, not only will everything will go smoothly, but our copy will have the sizzle it has been lacking."
